Fasting (Food Abstinence)

In this video I attempt to fast for five days. There was a lot of great background information I wanted to include but unfortunately the video had to be under 5 minutes. I feel for this topic a 10-20 minute video would have provided the best content and information for persuading, which was my intention as well as overcoming an obstacle. A further limitation was my self isolation after displaying some symptoms for COVID-19, fortunately they have gone but this limited the range of shots i could capture and present. I feel a little disappointed as this was a topic close to my heart and interest, and I would like to have displayed it better, though I hope you enjoy and perhaps learn something along the way. If you have any questions about fasting or my experience and reasoning please feel free to email me @ alexander.summers01@utrgv.edu.

I had 2 options with the shoot format, either make it a vlog style and give daily feedback on how I was feeling and coping, or alternatively i shot an entirely informational video that had very little personal content and was very wordy. I feel the one I chose is more personable and therefore serves the purpose of persuasion through experience rather than through literature.

Days in the Life

4 minutes, 3 golfers, 2 days, 1 video. This sarcasm filled video follows 3 college Golfers over 2 days. There is plenty of average footage of Golf edited to make it appear youthful and energetic. Some impromptu interviewing along the way will hopefully give you some fun insight into 2 of UTRGV’s finest. I hope you enjoy seeing what we get up to in a day and can share some laughs too.

This Video was shot and edited on my old trusty iPhone 4 due to my laptop being in repair when I began. Regretfully I couldn’t find a good way of changing it to landscape, so we’re stuck watching this in Portrait for now. I am still happy with what I achieved given the equipment at hand.

UTRGV Takes on The Oldest Tournament in College Golf History

The UTRGV men’s Golf team are lucky to travel up and down the nation in the pursuit of Trophies. We compete against some of the world’s best Amateur competition in the highest Division of NCAA Golf. The Team is represented by 8 countries, England, Scotland, Italy, Malaysia, Thailand, Mexico, Japan and USA. This week takes us to Laredo, a much closer event than we are used to, but arguably the most prestigious. The Border Olympics is the oldest remaining Collegiate golf event, with the inaugural competition occurring in 1952. Last year we placed 3rd as a team which saw us climb over 50 spots in the national rankings, this shows the importance of a strong performance in a strong fielded event such as this one. 5 of the 8 nationalities are represented this week. These Ten photographs follow the short journey to, and practice round portions of the week.

Adam Arif (Malaysia) and Luca Portelli (Italy) Loading the UTRGV golf van with all the equipment. This is Adam’s first trip with the team. There was a lot of nervous energy as he comes to terms with the expectations and responsibility he is about to take on.
Deep in thought. Henry Fisher (USA) studies the golf course using Google Earth. Time is always a factor for a travelling team, and preparation is the key to success, there is no use in wasting that which is precious.
Luca Portelli (Italy) ponders the menu. Being form Milan Italy, Luca has experienced some of the greatest cuisines available, it is always interesting to see him deliberate the choices at restaurants we eat at, seeking the closest thing to dining luxury possible given the deep set limitations we are presented with.
Henry Fisher (USA) warms up for the practice round following the 3 hour bus journey. Notice we carry our National Flags on our bags, it reminds us of where we have come from to get here, how diverse we are, how a brotherhood can be formed by individuals from all 4 corners of the world. I like to call this one “War of Independence.” Interpret that as you see fit.
Tae Itthiratchai (Thailand) and Adam (Malaysia) tee of on Hole number 1 of the Max golf course Laredo. Our team is represented by 3 Asian nations and 4 Asian players. They stick together and help each other through times of trouble. It is interesting that they still use English as their communication medium. The stunning brick clubhouse provides a strong backdrop to this image that goes deeper than just 2 golfers.
Luca Portelli (Italy) “The Milano Poser.” He holds his finish with precision equal to his preparation for the shot, the round and the tournament. The 200 foot radio tower in the background seems almost more like a streak across the photograph, structures of that height and width are astonishing. Luca stands at a slight 6’4 and we often draw comparisons.
Head Men’s Golf Coach Philip Tate (English Passport dual citizen of the USA) in deep discussion with Luca Portelli (Italy.) Although there is over a foot of height difference between these two, the angle is flattering to one of these people, can you guess which one?
We don’t have these back in England. Luca (Italy) and Tae (Thailand) winding down after a long day of travel and practice. Weary people, Sun faded vehicles and cacti, a desert dream.
Back on the road. Luca (Italy) and Coach (USA) collaborating to find the Hotel. The roads seem to stretch forever here in an endless straight path leading to very little. We like to turn sideways in hopes for a more interesting spectacle.
Bed time. Luca (Italy) is a strategic and meticulous sleeper, tracking every minute and monitoring recovery. We were set to leave at 5 am the next morning so Luca knew he needed to be asleep by 7 pm. The end of a long day’s travel and practice. Preparations complete make for a sound sound sleep.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
